Reading Snapshot: Mid February

Currently Reading:

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling

I’m loving this book. I wish I had more time to read lately, because I’m enjoying every page. That’s kind of what I love about good non-fiction — since there’s not always a linear plot, I’m not powering through to find out what happens. Mindy makes me laugh and I want to savor the last 1/3 of the book.

The Red Blazer Girls by Michael D. Biel

I’m reading this as an audio book. I really like it and it’s super cute, I just have some great music CD’s in my car that are calling my name lately. I will finish by early next week.

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

This is our book club read. It’s prompting some great discussions about individuality and social structure in schools. The kids love it! We are about 75% through and should finish by the end of the month (reading very slowly). It was my favorite book in high school, so it’s interesting to read it again as an adult.

Up Next:

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

This may come sooner rather than later. It’s calling my name lately, I’m almost ready to sit down and read it all at once. Maybe this Sunday, since my girlfriend will be elsewhere and I’ll have my first Sunday alone in six weeks!

The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams

This is part of my February Required Reading, so I’m ready to start it and clear it from my shelf. I can’t wait.

What are you reading right now? What’s at the top of your TBR pile?

  1. The Kaling and the Spinelli books really call out to the little leftout high school girl still lurking in the heart of this ol’ lady. I cannot wait to read your review of the John Green book!

  2. It’s interesting about what you say about Stargirl. When i read it this year i found i really didn’t like it. What are some of your reasons for liking it in high school?

    • I think in high school I had this romantic notion that I would be like Stargirl and all the Leos would be silently and intensely in love with me. Now I realize that I don’t want to be a Stargirl, but I want to be more accepting and kind to EVERYONE. I am not a Stargirl like the character in the book, but my kids all think they are and it’s cute.

      • I see what you mean. I liked the charterers, and the romance between Leo and Stargirl. But i didn’t like the ending, it seemed unsatisfactory to me. The porcupine necktie thing was sweet,i just wished they had stayed together.

  3. Ugh. I have two more required readings for February (I need to finish Worst Journey in the World and Tea Rose) and I’m feeling the pressure! I’m also trying to finish listening to 11/22/63 by Stephen King… I may have bit off more than I can chew…

    • I haven’t even started either of my required readings yet. I have exactly 12 days to read them both, but I think I can do it! What’s the “punishment” if you don’t finish your requirements?

      • I feel like a total failure and have to admit as much on my February round up post… I now have 1 3/4 books left to read and I’m about a 1/3 of the way through the audio book. It can be done but I’ll have to ignore my family for this last week!

  4. I am number 11 in my library hold line for “The Fault in Our Stars”… I keep reading so many good things about it, can’t wait to get it!

I also wanted to thank you for your posts about your career. It is interesting to hear about what you do and what you love about it, especially as I am re-contemplating what the heck to do with my own life.

  5. i absolutely loved stargirl when i read it. i’m so glad that you’re reading it with your club. it made me smile. :)
